WILLIAM LYON MCKENZIE

True Fact: This man inspired my novel, REBEL MOON

Welcome to my website. Come in and have a look around. And don’t be afraid to snoop–that is NOT my picture on the right! (Scroll down to see the real me.)

I write historical fiction—that’s history with the boring bits left out–for young people of all ages.

As a kid I could often be found with my nose in a book, but history (yawn) was as exciting as a snail race. Then one memorable day in Grade 8, along came William Lyon Mackenzie, the guy with the sour pickle face you see here –>.

He was Canada’s first rebel. He said that the government wasn’t fair, the rich had all the power, and all men should be equal. That was something I could relate to. Better yet, his rebellion took place right in my childhood hometown, Toronto.

After that history was my favourite subject.

I liked to write too, but a Negative Experience with a Horrible Teacher in high school convinced me I didn’t have the talent. (Little did I know that talent is only part of the equation.)

Instead I went into teaching, where I found that kids remember stories better than facts. That’s what inspired me to finally pick up a pen–or log onto my computer–and write.

Here I am searching for inspiration in my favourite place–nature. RITA
